日本人對於家紋有種難以割捨的情感，隨著戰敗後的日本和歐美文化的入侵，家紋帶著「軍國」「封建」的味道而漸漸式微。

家紋的由來
「家紋」日本的傳統文化，用來表徵家系，血統，地位，也有直稱為「紋所」或「紋」，日本的家紋也常以「兜飾」來呈現，兜也就是古時戰爭時武士所使用的盔甲，當時的武士為了要表彰自己的家族和歸屬勢力，同時跟敵人作區別，所以也會將家紋繪於盔甲上。
家 紋起源於平安時代中期(西元794-1185年間)，當時聖德太子在奈良時代(西元710-794年間)，因為裝飾性的目的而開始在器物上面繪製圖樣，一 直到平安時代，因為當時有許多的貴族為了要跟其他人作區別，所以使得這些圖樣不只呈現視覺上的美感，同時也開始有了特色與意義。
類型家紋的設計長寬比為1：1，圖案為太陽,星,山,河川,雲等自然象徵和動植物全體或是部位為參考居多。
除了一些特殊的圖案有非明文限制外(如皇室或一些將軍的後代等)，其他的大部分沒有什麼使用限制。
家紋以4大家族「源平藤橘」(源氏,平氏,藤氏,橘氏)最為有名。
